That humidifier pad has its own maintenance schedule.

Identify the installed humidifier, match its water panel and follow the model's maintenance steps before the heating season.

Hands hold a rectangular evaporative humidifier water panel above a utility work surface.

Changing the furnace's air filter does not maintain the humidifier attached to the ductwork. An evaporative humidifier may have a separate water panel, distribution tray and drain arrangement. Start with its model number before buying a pad that merely looks the right size.

Match the humidifier, not the furnace brand

Find the humidifier's own identification and owner manual. The furnace and humidifier may be from different manufacturers, and their replacement parts serve different purposes. Keep the specified panel number with the equipment record.

AprilAire's maintenance guidance gives different intervals for different models: several use an annual panel change, while its Model 400 needs attention more often during the heating season. Use your exact manual and water conditions rather than applying one interval to every installed humidifier.

A steam humidifier uses a different maintenance arrangement. Do not treat its canister as an interchangeable evaporative pad or follow an evaporative-unit video for steam equipment.

Check which parts are disposable

Minerals left as water evaporates can restrict a water panel. AprilAire describes its panels as replacement items, with cleaning of other components addressed separately. Scrubbing or soaking a disposable panel is not automatically an approved substitute.

A closed bypass humidifier is attached to ductwork with a separate round bypass connection.
Identify the humidifier and its normal controls before opening anything. A nearby duct damper may belong to a different system.

Before opening an owner-serviceable compartment, follow the manufacturer's shutdown, electrical-isolation and water-supply steps. If access, isolation or the procedure is unclear, arrange service. Keep water away from electrical parts.

Follow the instructions for panel orientation, tray seating, feed tubing and drainage. Do not disturb furnace wiring, bypass an interlock or force a cover closed over a poorly seated assembly.

A reset light is not the whole check

After reassembly, use the prescribed restart and inspection routine. Look for leaks from a safe position and confirm the normal setting is restored. If the unit has a test mode, leave it in the operating mode required by its instructions.

  • Record the date and replacement part.
  • Note repeated scaling, leakage or a blocked drain for the service provider.
  • Check room humidity and window condensation during normal use.
  • Use the correct seasonal control and bypass arrangement.

A new panel does not justify raising humidity until every room feels different. Health Canada recommends moisture control that avoids dampness and condensation. If the windows are wet, reassess the setting and building conditions.

The useful maintenance record names what was replaced and what was checked. It is more helpful next winter than a reminder saying only 'furnace filter done'.
