Why is the boiler running when the windows are open?

A boiler may still heat tap water in summer. Identify its jobs and seasonal controls before switching it off or treating every cycle as a fault.

It is July. The room thermostat is turned down, the windows are open, and the boiler starts while somebody is washing up. Before assuming it has forgotten the season, check whether the same appliance also supplies the household's hot water.

One boiler can serve two different demands

A combi boiler provides both space heating and domestic hot water. Another arrangement uses a boiler to heat water in a separate indirect storage tank. In either case, a warm-weather shower or tank reheating cycle can give the boiler a legitimate reason to run.

A separate tank does not automatically mean a separate heat source. Read its label and the equipment records, or ask the service contractor to identify the arrangement. Do not trace uncertain pipework by opening covers or turning isolation valves.

Make a simple note of when the activity occurs. Is it immediately after a shower, during a programmed hot-water period, or throughout the afternoon while nobody is using water? You are gathering a pattern, not proving a diagnosis from the sound of a pump.

Use the seasonal mode in the correct manual

Some controls let you disable room heating while retaining domestic hot-water operation. Labels and options differ. Follow the owner instructions for the installed model, and confirm what remains active. Turning off the electrical supply is not equivalent to selecting a hot-water-only mode.

The same caution matters when leaving home. A power shutdown may also disable protective functions. Ask the contractor for the appropriate seasonal and away settings rather than borrowing advice for a different boiler or climate.

Tap-water demand and room-heating demand are separate questions, even when one boiler serves both.

Hot rooms are a different clue

If radiators are repeatedly heating the rooms when space heating should be off, report that. Include which radiators warm up, whether the room thermostat is calling, and whether the change follows hot-water use. A control or circulation problem needs more than a seasonal label to identify it.

Also mention unfamiliar fault messages, a new leak, repeated unsuccessful starts or a marked change in behaviour. Photograph the ordinary display before any reset and follow the manual's fault instructions. Repeatedly clearing a fault can erase the useful story without resolving its cause.

For an otherwise comfortable house with normal hot water, an occasional summer boiler cycle is a reason to understand the equipment rather than switch things off at random. Write down the model, the two services it supplies and the intended summer mode. Next year's first warm day will be less puzzling.
