An efficiency rating describes equipment performance under particular conditions. A household bill also depends on the amount of heat needed, local energy charges and how the installed system operates.

When comparing a heat pump with a furnace or a hybrid arrangement, ask for an estimate built around your house and current tariff information.

Use the same heat requirement for both options

Natural Resources Canada's heat-pump guidance explains that performance varies with operating conditions and that economics depend on the alternative heating system and energy prices. A single favourable COP is not a year-round cost estimate.

The comparison should use the same building heat requirement and indoor comfort assumptions. It should identify seasonal efficiency, backup-heat use and any control strategy that changes which equipment operates.

Current utility rates and applicable delivery charges belong in the calculation. Fixed charges only disappear if the underlying service or charge truly ends; keeping gas for another appliance can change that comparison.

Questions that make the numbers useful

  • Which weather and energy-price assumptions were used?
  • How much heating is assigned to backup equipment?
  • Are cooling, fan energy and maintenance treated consistently?
  • Which charges remain regardless of heating choice?
  • How does the result change if prices or the winter differ?

Compare installation cost, incentives and financing separately from annual operation so the estimate remains readable. A lower monthly payment is not automatically a lower total cost.

Past bills can help check the starting point, but occupancy, weather and renovations affect them. Explain those changes when sharing records.

Request a range or sensitivity comparison where uncertainty is material. That makes the decision more useful than a precise-looking single savings figure.

The goal is a transparent estimate you can understand and update, alongside the comfort, cooling and equipment choices that matter to your household.
