I set it to sixteen and still had to wait

Choose the temperature you want, then look at recovery, sun and airflow instead of chasing the display downward.

An afternoon bedroom with the blind partly lowered.

I came home to a warm house, lowered the thermostat well below any temperature I actually wanted, and stood in front of the register. Ten minutes later I lowered it again. Neither action had made the afternoon sun leave the bedroom.

I was using the target temperature like an accelerator. What I really needed was a realistic recovery plan.

Set the temperature you want to reach

Source: Natural Resources Canada: air conditioning your home

NRCan's air-conditioning guidance recommends choosing a setting that provides acceptable comfort. For conventional single-stage cooling, a much lower target does not create extra cooling capacity; it can simply keep the equipment running longer and overshoot the comfort you wanted.

I closed the blind before the strongest sun reached the room and checked that the air openings were clear. Those actions addressed actual conditions rather than the appearance of the thermostat display.

Controls and capacity still matter

Source: Trane: variable-speed system operation

Variable-speed systems can adjust output, and different controls use different recovery strategies. Trane describes that modulation in its system literature. Follow your equipment's guidance rather than assuming every thermostat responds identically to a large change.

If a house routinely cannot recover to a sensible setting, record the starting temperature, outdoor conditions, schedule and time pattern. A technician can assess capacity, airflow, controls and building loads. Repeatedly demanding a colder number does not identify the limitation.

During dangerous heat, use a safely cooled place rather than waiting for a stubborn room to become comfortable.

I restored the temperature we actually wanted and stopped checking the display every few minutes. The useful adjustment was to the day's schedule and window shade. The number sixteen had mostly demonstrated that I was impatient and capable of pressing a button.
